Around age twenty-five, a set of mail-order paints sparked his artistic career, leading to a scholarship at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Returning to Wyoming, Gollings resumed cowboy work on a Cheyenne reservation while further developing his art, becoming proficient in \u003cstrong\u003eetching\u003c\/strong\u003e under Hans Kleiber's guidance. In 1909, he built a studio in Sheridan, Wyoming, dedicating himself to painting Western scenes and signing his works with \"Gollings\" and a pony-track symbol, though he occasionally supplemented his income with ranch work.
